Wanted to explore a darker version of the mermaid. It's my first complete digital illustration.
My goal was to portray a tail quite different than what we usually see for mermaids.
I used gimp, krita and photoshop at different stages of the process.
Photo references used for different body parts.
Comments will be very much appreciated.

There is alot I like about this work, the contrast, depth, perspective and the all the details.

The colors looks beautiful and the contrast between her hair and and the rest of the scenery is a eyecatcher and a well placed focal point. That being said I do feel that some of the colors could have been clearer/stronger, they feel slightly diluted. If you look at [link] for comparison you can see what I mean. If you disagree then thats fine, I won't argue. ^^;

Love the depth of the image. The deeper parts of the sea I find particularly intriguing, its threatening, alluring and unknown. However I do like the scale and the mood shift as you get closer to the ocean surface. There the wonders of the ocean seems to shine trough.

The perspective is another aspect of this I really like. I'm terrible at perspective so It always amazes me when people do detailed pieces like these in a interesting angle. I like the frogs eye view here, it helps with the portrayal of depth and includes so many aspects of the ocean. Another thing I like is that this painting keeps the character anonymous and a part of the scenery.

The details are lovely all around, her tail is is kind of eel like which I think was a good call, certainly makes the mermaid interesting.

Overall I really like this, the atmosphere and execution is really well done, great work mate. =)

Your very welcome, keep making amazing art! And I understand, usually if I critique something I don't mean for the artist to fix the current image maybe just keep things in mind for future projects, if they agree with it that is. =)

Sorry for slow reply, its all the ladies you know. =D

Wonderful ! The ambiance and the harmony in the composition is beautiful. You have make a good choice when you choose the place of the curves in the landscape because it seems to be reflected by the curves of the mermaid herself... Maybe you can be interested by my fairy contest [link] it will be a great joy to have you in

I love the design you chose for the tail. It makes much more sense for something like a human torso to move underwater undulating like that than the propulsion system of a torpedo-bodied fish.

The background and colors are done beautifully, too. Lovely!

Wow. That is stunning... Do you mind me asking what you did in Krita? We're also always looking for feedback from professional artists too, so feel free to make your opinions heard. They'll be listened too. :) (btw I actually used to live in Sydney doing animation stuff myself, oh and you seem to have missed mentioning "Krita" in the applications section of your Resume ;P )

Thanks a lot!
Well I started doing the initial line drawing sketch in gimp and a bit of painting. Then i found out that on my dual screen set up there's a problem with color management so I moved to Krita for more painting work. The one thing that i really miss in Krita is the ability to have a smaller copy of my window like in photoshop. This is great to be able to keep an eye on the "big picture" when painting details on one part of the painting. Maybe Krita has it but i couldn't really find what i was looking for. That would be an awesome feature to add. I think it's equivalent to "new view" in Gimp.
Oh cool where did you work in Sydney? Yes i'll have to add Krita in my resume but i'm only beginning to use it :)
Thanks again for the kind words!

Yes but new view creates a window with the whole interface so it's hard to keep a smaller version on the side.
Also this new view doesn't sync when you flip the original horizontal or vertical.
I hope i'm making sense :)

Hmmm... I'll have to experiment to see if this all works, but I think you should be able to do tab to remove all of the interface elements (you may need to go and change the settings in Settings > Configure Krita > Canvas Only Mode). I think there may be a bug in early 2.4 versions breaking this though. I know it's working in my current (source code) version of Krita.

The second view not showing mirroring sounds like a bug that still needs reporting.

Thanks for the feedback!

Strangely I don't have Canvas Only mode in the view menu.. I have version 2.4.0 on Kubuntu. Is there a newer stable release?
Also I was looking for a way to set opacity with keyboard numbers but couldn't find it in the shorcuts.

That would be very valuable tool instead of having to use the slider. Same for the flow with shift+numbers.

Thanks again!

From memory, there was a bug with it that didn't get fixed in time for the 2.4 release, so I think that feature was turned off for the release... Good news however, is that v2.5 is just around the corner. :)
